May 19th 2023 – Port Said to Cairo Egypt – Great Pyramids & Sphinx
It was a 3 ½ hour drive to Cairo from Port Said. There was about 15 buses in a convoy with a police escort on the way there. We went through many check points and lots of speed bumps. We arrived at the Pyramids at the same time as thousands of other tourist. We first stopped between the two large pyramids and a second at a viewing site. When we first visited the pyramids in 2009 Giza was on one side and the desert as far as you could see was on the other. Now the desert has been built up but they did limit how close building could come saving a large area as it was in the past. In 2009 you need to leave the Pyramids and drive in town to get to the Sphinx. Now there is a road the goes directly from the Pyramids to the Sphinx. After lunch we returned to the ship but only with a few other buses and no police escort.
